The boy, alone in the desert

Logline

A phrase, taught for comfort, returned by a stranger

A deadly border crossing separates a young boy from his mother, leaving him alone in the desert with a damaged phone and four words she taught him: never give up.

He holds onto them as more than comfort — a command he's afraid to fail. As exhaustion sets in, an old motivational video plays the same phrase back to him, and his mother’s words start to mean something new.

“Meaning is also created by the person who listens.”

The first seed of Never Give Up! came to me during the 2015 refugee crisis in Budapest. Migration suddenly stopped being a distant political subject — it was present in railway stations, on roads, in the language of everyday life. At the same time, public discussion reduced thousands of individual lives to a single, frightening abstraction.

At the center of the film is an ordinary phrase: “never give up.” A mother uses it to encourage her son, but after her death, the words become almost unbearable to him — less like comfort than a demand he no longer has the strength to obey. I wanted to return the conversation to its smallest human scale: one child, one mother, and the few words that remain between them.

Tamás Yvan Topolánszky is a Swiss-born Hungarian writer, director and producer. His debut feature CURTIZ won the Grand Prix des Amériques at the Montreal World Film Festival and earned him Best Director at the Riviera International Film Festival, before its worldwide release on Netflix. His producing credits include Heights and Depths, Silent Night and I Accidentally Wrote a Book. He most recently directed and produced the feature documentary Spring Wind – The Awakening, which drew more than 150,000 admissions in Hungarian cinemas and 3.4 million views within 48 hours of its free online release. Topolánszky is the co-founder of Budapest-based JUNO11 Pictures.
